Background of the Study:
Empowering women entrepreneurs is crucial for inclusive economic development, and retail banks play a significant role in this process by providing access to credit and tailored financial services. In Osun State, Keystone Bank has focused on promoting loan accessibility specifically designed for women entrepreneurs. By offering specialized loan products with flexible collateral requirements, lower interest rates, and customized repayment schedules, the bank aims to address the unique challenges faced by women in the business environment (Ibrahim, 2024). These initiatives not only provide essential capital for starting or expanding businesses but also contribute to increased financial independence and economic participation among women. Keystone Bank’s programs often include capacity-building workshops, mentorship opportunities, and financial literacy training tailored to women entrepreneurs, thereby fostering an environment where female-led businesses can thrive. The bank’s efforts are aligned with broader national goals of gender equality and economic empowerment, positioning women as key drivers of sustainable development. Despite these positive initiatives, significant barriers remain, including socio-cultural constraints, limited collateral, and sometimes an inherent bias in traditional lending practices. This study investigates how effective Keystone Bank’s loan accessibility programs are in empowering women entrepreneurs in Osun State. It explores the impact of these initiatives on business growth, job creation, and overall economic empowerment of women, drawing on recent data from 2023 to 2025 (Adeleye, 2023). The research further aims to identify best practices and policy recommendations that can enhance the role of retail banking in bridging the gender gap in entrepreneurship.
Statement of the Problem:
Although Keystone Bank has implemented targeted loan accessibility programs for women entrepreneurs, many challenges continue to impede the full realization of their empowerment potential. Socio-cultural barriers, such as traditional gender roles and limited access to resources, often restrict women’s ability to secure collateral, thereby limiting their eligibility for loans. Moreover, even when loans are accessible, a lack of adequate business training and mentorship results in suboptimal use of the funds, contributing to higher default rates and stunted business growth. In addition, systemic biases in credit evaluation processes may disadvantage women, who often have less formal business experience and financial documentation compared to their male counterparts. These challenges are compounded by external economic factors, such as market volatility and limited infrastructure in rural areas, which further hinder business expansion. As a result, despite the promising framework of Keystone Bank’s initiatives, the empowerment of women entrepreneurs remains uneven, with many potential beneficiaries either underserved or excluded. This study aims to critically assess the factors contributing to these challenges and to determine the overall impact of loan accessibility on the growth and sustainability of women-led businesses in Osun State (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
• To evaluate the impact of loan accessibility on the growth of women entrepreneurs at Keystone Bank.
• To identify barriers that hinder women’s access to credit and business success.
• To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of loan programs for women entrepreneurs.
